Stora Kopparberg in Falun Sweden is currently comprised of both an operational mine and a cultural museum. Known as one of the world’s oldest businesses, mining operations were already in place at this site by the year 1000 A.D. During the 17th century, the Falun copper mine accounted for 70% of the world copper production, but today is mined for its iron pyrite, zinc, lead and copper ores. Mining production is nearly 200,000 tons per year, and the pit is being enlarged continuously by this mining operation.
Since the days of King Gustavus I, nearly all Swedish monarchs have visited the Falun mine. These royal visitors have inscribed their names on the wall in the area known as the “Christmas Gift Chamber”. Nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the mine, museum and surrounding area are being preserved as a 17th Century Historical Site.
Completed and shipped to the project site in January 2007, the VACOM system at this site is filling a unique need with a unique solution. This 32,000 gallon per day unit is used to not only to treat waters produced as a result of mining activities to meet environmental standards, but also aids in metals recovery.
Dilute ferric sulfate from mine leachate is concentrated, recovered and sold to local vendors.
The system is part of a major effort to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the area.
